A few safe observations can help explain why a water softener is not working, but do not open pressurized components or force controls. Check the simple conditions first, then arrange help if the unit leaks, remains out of cycle, or continues producing hard water.
Start With Power and Bypass
Confirm that the unit is not in bypass and that the display has power if it normally uses electricity. Look for a tripped outlet or blank control panel, but do not use an extension cord or alter wiring. A power interruption may reset the clock and regeneration schedule without indicating a mechanical failure.
Look at Salt and Brine Conditions
Check whether the brine tank contains salt and whether the salt has formed a hard bridge above an empty space. Do not hit the tank aggressively or pour chemicals into it. If the salt level is normal but the unit never draws brine, the injector, float, valve, or water flow may need inspection.
Check for Leaks and Drain Problems
Inspect visible supply, drain, and brine lines for kinks, loose fittings, standing water, or a line that has come free. A drain line that is blocked or routed incorrectly can interrupt regeneration. Close the nearby shutoff only if you understand which valve controls the equipment and can do so safely.
Describe the Symptom Clearly
Notice whether hard water affects the whole building or only one fixture. A water-quality change can also come from an empty salt supply, incorrect settings, exhausted resin, a bypass position, or a separate plumbing issue. If possible, note the water hardness and when the change began.
Prepare for a Service Visit
Record the brand, model, error message, recent regeneration, recent plumbing work, and any unusual noise. Photos of the control head, connections, and label can help a provider prepare. Keep the path to the unit clear and avoid removing covers or adjusting internal settings without guidance.
When a Call Is the Better Option
Arrange professional help for persistent hard water, repeated regeneration, a leak, overflowing brine, unusual pressure, or a unit stuck in one cycle. Ask the provider to explain the observed cause, whether cleaning or a part is needed, and whether water testing or replacement should be considered.
